Bush Wins Again/Media Yawns
MIAMI, FLORIDA, February 28, 2001 (RFM News)--On Monday, February 26th, the Miami Herald announced it had completed a recount of undervotes cast in the November Presidential election between George Bush and Al Gore. The recount completes a review of four counties in which Democrats had challenged the results of the November 7, 2000 vote.
The Miami newspaper calculated there were not enough votes in Al Gore's ledger to change the results of the Florida certification. However, the story barely created a ripple in national media coverage. The Chicago Tribune ran the Miami Herald story on page six of its Tuesday edition.
Judy Cleary, Communications Director of Republicans For Fair Media, told RFM News, "Could you imagine if the Miami Herald's review of the vote in the four counties had indicated a Gore victory? The story would have been plastered across the front page of every newspaper in the United States." Cleary added, "But 'Bush wins again' is a non-story to these people. It's a blatant illustration of media bias and it's really unfair."
Gore and the Democrats requested a recount in four Florida counties, they were: Miami-Dade, Volusia, Palm Beach and Broward. A number of news organizations are currently conducting a recount of all Florida counties, which will be available in the near future.
