UN vs. UN...Ya Gotta Love It!
As I commit these thoughts to posterity, two old phrases come to mind, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend," and "I dont have a dog in this fight."
Well, okay, maybe a chihuaha.
I admit, its hard to think of any United Nations agency as my friend. But it seems theres at least one UN agency thats dedicated to the truth even if it violates some of todays most politically correct assumptions.
As for my taking sides with one arm of the UN against another, its a bit easier for me to do so when the matter at hand is the massively distorted issue of nuclear power.
Just how did the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation come to diplomatic blows with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs?
Its a simple matter of research versus propaganda. For years, the liberal media has been spoon-fed a distorted stream of misinformation surrounding the numbers of dead and ill radiation victims resulting from the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident. Adding to that shrill level of hysteria has been the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of OCHA.
A recent letter of chastisement sent to OCHA by UNSCEAR Chariman Lars-Erk Holm of Sweden blasted the OCHA report on the Chernobyl accident for its "unsubstantiated statements that have no support in scientific assessments."
The OCHA findings claimed 11 thousand cases of thyroid cancer reported as a result of the mishap. UNSCEAR figures show only 18 hundred documented cases, with more likely to occur in the future.
OCHA says "very little is known about the long-term health effects of exposure to radiation." UNSCEAR says more is known about radiation exposure than virtually any other carcinogen.
UNSCEAR also challenges an OCHA claim that the Chernobyl accident did more to mutate male DNA than 15 million years of natural evolution. Dr. Holms letter calls that statement "scientifically unfounded."
In truth, virtually everything we have been told about the seriousness of the damage caused by that woefully designed Chernobyl reactor has been called into question by an honest group of United Nations scientists. Even the numbers of fatalities have been rectified 30 dead and hundreds of others injured by immediate exposure to rogue radiation.
I doubt any agency of the UN could honestly be called "my friend." But as a seeker of the truth without regard for conventions of the day, Dr. Holm is definitely barking up the right tree.
"Sic em, Doctor."
