There Goes My Bumper Sticker

In the wake of the 9/11 disaster, Americans banded together in a rare show of national harmony. Who ever would have envisioned Senate Republicans and Democrats joining together in song? Particularly when that song paid lip-service to the Divine being so consistently and traditionally resented by the Senate’s liberal chorus?

"God Bless America," they sang.

For at least 90 days or so.

Looks like it’s time to peel off my "United We Stand" bumper sticker. Unfortunately, partisan business as usual has returned to Washington D.C. Word leaked out this week in Newsweek Magazine that Democratic strategists will soon undertake a political offensive against conservatives and Christians, comparing those of us who populate pews each Sunday to radical Muslims.

The new enemy is intolerance. By singling out Christianity for the attack, those crafting this ugly offensive hope their own divisive, intolerant motives will be overlooked by the American people.

Trial runs are already underway. This week, a liberal columnist writing in the New York Times compared fundamentalist Christians to the Afghan Taliban. Anthony Lewis objects to the fact that followers of Jesus accept the Biblical story of Creation, reject the unproven, unlikely theories of Charles Darwin and thus challenge the "so-called" scientific method behind much of contemporary civilization.

The notion that I’m ready to skyjack a jetliner and ram it into the nearest tall building because I refute the claim that my grandfather to the 200th power was a small ball of primordial sludge is worse than absurd…it’s positively dangerous.

We should not be surprised by the ignorance that would divert all "people of faith" into the same holding cell.

Not only is it evil, it’s a clear-cut case of intellectual laziness.

To believe such lunacy, one must ignore the teachings of love and forgiveness that fill the pages of the Christian New Testament, even as our leaders have taught us to overlook the tenets of hatred and violence that inflame readers of the Koran.

To become a Christian terrorist, one must overlook the teachings of his Leader. To become an Islamic terrorist, one need only blindly obey.

Shine a little light on this shameful political ploy and it should evaporate before our very eyes. One can only hope…and pray.
