Way
to Go, Rudy!
Now and then, one of our public officials takes a stand and
does what is right, no matter what the cost in dollars or public opinion.
Last week was one of those all-too-rare occasions. The sixth
wealthiest man in the world, Saudi Arabian Prince Alwaleed bin Talal came
calling on New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, oozing condolences and armed with a
$10 million relief check to help the Big Apple rebuild.
The mayor graciously escorted his well-heeled guest to
Ground Zero and accepted the mammoth gift at a public ceremony.
Things changed quickly, however, when the Prince issued a
statement to the press blaming the attack, in part, on a U.S. Middle East
foreign policy that Muslims believe tilts in favor of Israel.
When the mayor was informed of the prince’s parting shot
toward America, Giuliani issued a scathing statement claiming the prince’s
remarks were "part of the problem." The $10 million check was
returned uncashed.
The State Department and the Saudi government were both
quick to scurry for cover and distance themselves from the entire
controversy. No surprises there.
But what a breath of fresh air. Here is a man who has gone
from "goat" to hero in one very tragic month’s time; someone who
has the guts to put his money where his mouth…and heart are.
We obviously cannot endorse much of what we know about the
personal lifestyle of Mayor Giuliani. But courage and consistency are
qualities that deserve commendation, wherever they are found.
There were rumors circulating this week that when the mayor
leaves office, soon, he may be considered by President Bush to replace the
current, ineffective CIA Director, Clinton holdover, George Tenet.
Perhaps Mayor Giuliani could restore some respect to an
office that has been demonized far too long in the collective conservative
consciousness. Given the shadowy nature of the war we may be waging for
years against primarily Islamic terrorism, it would reassure the American
people to know a man of conscience is making the hard decisions.
America salutes you, Mr. Mayor!
