"Right-to-Life" Pope Attacks Abortion/Euthanasia

Vatican City, February 15, 2000 (WT)—Pope John Paul II has commanded the Catholic church faithful to do whatever they can to overturn laws permitting abortion and euthanasia.

Marking the fifth anniversary of his Evangelium Vitae (Gospel of Life) encyclical, the Pope minced no words, saying, "These laws area seed of corruption in society and its foundations. Civil and moral conscience cannot accept this false inevitability, just as it cannot accept the idea that wars or inter-ethnic extermination are inevitable."

Regarding the course of action his followers should adopt against pro-death policies, John Paul wrote, "They should leave no stone unturned to eliminate this legalized crime or at least to limit the damage of these laws, remaining aware of the duty to respect the right to life, from conception tot he natural death of every human being, even the least gifted."
