PRESIDENTIAL SUCCESSION
by WebToday staff writer
What if the plane hijacked by terrorists that crashed in Pennsylvania September 11, 2001 hit the Capitol instead? What if it hit the White House? For that matter, what would happen if two planes hit both targets?
Who would be our new President?
The staff of WebToday tested each other to see if they knew. None of us passed.
We all knew #2 (V.P. Cheney) and #3 (House Speaker Hastert). But most of us flunked from #4 (President Robert Byrd!) on down. Surprisingly, Senator Strom Thurmond is not even in the line of succession.
Imagine that, Byrd trumps Colin Powell. For that matter, if the top 12 were lost in a tragedy, we can take comfort in knowing President Melquiades Rafael Martinez (#13) would be in charge of not only our borders but our bombs. Americans might be more likely to believe that Vincente Fox is ahead of Melquiades Martines in the U.S. Presidential Succession Parade! He may very well be since Martinez was born in Cuba.
In fact, far more people know who the top 20 pop musicians, movie stars or sports figures are than the 20 men and women who are a heartbeat away from the presidency!
For this reason, we present to you the official line of U.S. Presidential SUCCESSION. However, keep in mind that if something happened to the Vice President first, followed by the President, the replacement vice president would then be President, superseding the rest of this list.
In such a case, the new President could be anyone from David Rockefeller to David Bowie.
One final sobering point is that although the staff of WebToday dislikes having a big federal government that often encroaches upon and/or goes beyond its constitutionally imposed limits, our current government is much better than no government or anarchy!
All kidding aside, if the ions of a single black market neutron bomb were ever to set off from the men's room of some downtown Washington DC office, this entire SUCCESSION list could be out the window. Ironically, add a hyphen to the word "succession" and you get "success-ion."
In such a case, it might be President Joe Blow from Idaho or Harry Whose-it from Hawaii. For that matter, since President Reagan's near brush with death and the Alexander Haig "I'm in charge" incident (when he was not really next in line), virtually anybody could step up to the plate, in which case possession could become 99% of the law.
And if the military didn't like who they saw commanding them, it's anyone's guess what would happen.
We at WebToday believe both out leaders and those who oppose our current form of government (i.e. terrorists from without and globalists from within) have played out many of these scenarios quietly many times. There are possibly some who may be rooting for one over another. But just like in musical chairs, you can have the best strategy in the world but you don't know for sure until the final music stops and there is only one person sitting in one chair. The rain falls on the just and the unjust and if there were ever to be such an (up until recently) unthinkable event, only God knows who will govern or rule the United States of America.
First we call upon WebToday readers to prayerfully consider contacting your elected representatives to propose, within constitutional limits, legislation that would allow the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate and the President to operate in separate regional areas connected by video monitors where necessary. Otherwise opportunism, confusion, and/or anarchy could prevail. Or we could be facing a new government and a new constitution--or no constitution within moments.
Second we call for a return of state powers and state rights. Many have been usurped. We must return to the vision of our founding fathers who advocated strong sovereign states and limited federal powers.
Third we urge all to submit to the mighty hand and perfect will of God almighty, in humble repentance and renewed purpose and guidance for our nation, our leaders and ourselves.
ORDER OF U.S. PRESIDENTIAL SUCCESSION:
In the Presidential Succession Act of 1792, the president pro tempore was next in line after the vice president to succeed to the presidency. Truman's 1947 proposal reversed this order, putting the Speaker of the House ahead of the president pro tempore.
In 1886 Congress changed the order of presidential succession, replacing the president pro tempore and the Speaker of the House with the cabinet officers. Proponents of this change argued that the congressional leaders lacked executive experience, and none had served as president, while six former secretaries of state had been elected to that office.
The cabinet members are ordered in the line of succession according to the date their offices were established.
Prior to the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, which was ratified on Feb.10, 1967, there was no provision for filling a vacancy in the vice presidency. When a president died in office, the vice president succeeded him. The vice presidency then remained vacant.
