Vermont Town Clerk said "No" to signing Homosexual Marriage Certificates

Could Face Criminal Charges

By Vermont State Representative Nancy Sheltra for WebToday

WASHINGTON, DC, August 28, 2000 (WebToday)--Vermont's civil union (homosexual marriage) law, which went into effect officially July 1, 2000, forces town clerks to issue the marriage certificate.

They do have one exception that allows them to appoint an assistant as their representative for the task.

Sue Fortuanti, from Corinth, decided to appoint Vermont's Governor Howard Dean, and her State Senator Mark McDonald to be her assistants, she refused to issue the certificates.

Governor Howard Dean and Senator McDonald wholeheartedly supported the civil union (homosexual marriage) law. They, however refused to accept this assignment.

Sue Fortuanti is not the only Vermont town clerk that is saying, "NO" to the issuance of the certificate. There is a penalty of $100.00 for Vermont town clerks if they fail or neglect to perform their "duties." It doesn't stop there however, the "Fair House and Public Accommodations" Act could enforce a $1000.00 fine or criminal action for their refusal to issue civil union (homosexual marriage) certificates.

The civil union law does not give the Vermont town clerks an opportunity to deny issuance of the certificates, due to their religious beliefs.

It is certain that the word discrimination has taken on a new meaning in Vermont.

Please pray for Vermont, and our nation.
