O'Connor: The Senior Conservative

Disloyal Daschle
888WebToday January 7, 2002 Dick O'ConnorIn the Senate, "Treasonous Tom" Daschle has unilaterally decreed that 60 Senators (out of 100) must now support any legislation that he deems 'controversial', before he will allow a floor vote of the full Senate. This gives him full control over any Republican legislation or Republican appointments that Bush may make. He can banish any legislation that he doesn't approve of to languish in committee until it expires. The same is true with any of Bush's judicial nominations or cabinet staffing appointments that Daschle doesn't like. Fifty-one votes are the majority, and Daschle is subverting the rule of law. He may be legally allowed to make this decision under Senate rules, but he is flaunting his dictatorial treason in the face of the American people who believe in majority rule (in this case, 51 votes).
He is not doing this to be patriotic. Far from it. It is a purely partisan plan to subvert the interests of the nation to benefit the Democratic Party. If he truly demonstrated patriotism for the nation, most of us would understand. Maybe not approve of his action, but still understand where he was coming from. However when we can see nothing but partisan stalemate, and obstructive waste of Congressional time when we need sound action to meet the enemy, we are inclined to call his partisan leadership by a more fitting and deadly name: TREASON!Who is benefiting from his foot-dragging, the Al-Qiada or the United States? Isn't Daschle aiding the cause of the Taliban when he obstructs our recovery by savaging the stimulus bill? By holding the energy bill hostage? It has been almost 4 months since the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. We could have had an economic stimulus bill already in effect two months ago, except for Daschle. Who was elected President anyway, Mr. Bush or Tom Daschle? No wonder he gets anthrax spores in his office mail!!
Mr. Bush believes in bi-partisanship, but he has never run into the Daschle definition of bi-partisanship. The President should proceed with his recess appointments before Jan.20th, when Congress returns. He has that power, if he will only exercise it. He must confront Dascchle at every opportunity. When one person (Daschle) obstructs the recovery of the United States from a cowardly terrorist attack, that individual must be made to realize that his actions are considered treasonous, and his countrymen will hold him liable.
Why doesn't our national Media ask Daschle if he is not helping the enemy? If a Republican Senate Majority Leader had demanded 60 votes before he would allow a vote of the full Senate on items that he considered controversial, the left wing Media would have been all over him!
