Time to UN-do the UN

By Dick O'Connor

It is time to start thinking about leaving the United Nations. When we attend a conference against racism and are asked to endorse a document prepared by the Arab League that equates Zionism with racism, we are being asked to act like a fool. Then we are asked to condemn the State of Israel as the only culprit in the Middle East war, which flies in the face of reality. It is time to re-think our stance and re-arrange our priorities. It is time to realize that we taxpayers are paying for at least one fourth of the expenses of this Socialist group.

When we are asked for reparations for slavery, of which no citizen of the US is guilty, we are dealing with radical idiots. When the same group of African nations also wants reparations for colonialism, they have gone too far. Do you think Canada wants reparations from Britain because Britain once colonized their country? We were once a colony of Britain also. And France. And Spain. Should they be required to pay us just because they settled this nation? Maybe the British should require France to pay them for the Norman Conquest in 1066.

We have become wealthy because we have freedom. Freedom to try something new, to take a chance, to dare to be different. We were rugged individualists and were not held back by oppressive and corrupt governments. Our Founding Fathers saw to that.

Nigeria is one of the richest countries in natural resources in the world and yet the population lives in poverty. Somebody is skimming off the wealth and probably depositing it in numbered Swiss bank accounts. Zimbabwe, once known as Rhodesia and the breadbasket of Africa, is now driving the whites out in spite of past reassurances that this would never happen. As a result, the people no longer export the produce and grain as they once did.

Slavery is currently practiced in Sudan and Mauritania, but no mention is made of reparations from the slave traders. The stupidity of the situation demands our attention. If the United Nations can be taken over by the "have-nots" and be used as a propaganda mouthpiece, we have no business helping them along.

Koffi Annon, Secretary General of the United Nations recently was 'distressed' because Australia refused asylum to some 460 Asians who were illegally trying to enter the country. He felt that Australia should have let them in, disregarding the fact that there are people who arrange such voyages for profit. When the Secretary General advocates the illegal entry into a country despite the wishes of that nation, he is acting in violation of that country's laws. We do not need to support such a group.

When the United Nations was formed in San Francisco in 1945 after WW2, it was not designed to satisfy the values of Socialism. It was not designed to take from the rich and give to the poor. It was not designed to 'level the playing field' for the poorer nations. It was designed to prevent genocide (a recent example: the terrible massacre of the Tutsi tribe by the Hutu tribe in Rwanda in1997, where the UN did absolutely nothing except stand aside and wring its hands.

We don't need this. We can make our own treaties with the countries that do not hate us. We can even make treaties with those that do hate us, but still know right from wrong. We can uncork our own oil wills and tell the Arab League to get lost. We do not need to be blackmailed by a bunch of rag tag second-rate nations who really just want us to hand over our wealth.
