SUV Bomb Shelter

Attending the Doctors for Disaster Preparedness convention in Las Vegas, an informative paper was presented by Sharon Packer and Paul Seyfried from Utah Shelter Systems about "Civil Defense Worldwide. The world outside the USA takes the possibility of war quite seriously. Switzerland is definitely at the forefront offering bomb shelter availability for its entire citizenry. Even socialist Sweden has sufficient bomb shelters for 65% of its population. Where the US protection is negligible to say the least.

Going beyond just the bomb shelter coverage, Switzerland requires all males 18 years old to not only go through a year of military service, but upon leaving, they keep their automatic weapon to take home. The city of Geneva has been known to go a full year without one armed robbery due to EVERYONE being armed so heavily. All able bodied adults are also required to go through Civil Defense training to give them skills in emergency medical procedures and fire fighting skills.

After hearing so many examples of how other countries are prepared for the worst versus the oblivious attitudes here in the USA, one individual thought he was being funny to suggest we Americans use our SUV's as bomb shelters. He did not realize the author of "Nuclear War Survival Skills", Major Cresson H. Kearny was present. One of his topics in the book is how to use your vehicle as an emergency bomb shelter. Just carry a shovel with you, dig hole, drive the SUV over it and crawl into the hole. I asked Mr. Kearny exactly how much protection one could receive using this method? He told me that if you shape the dirt properly so as to have the rim of your hole close to the underside of your vehicle, you will receive the equivalent of a "factor 20 bomb shelter protection." He went on to say "if you filled the floor and seats with dirt, you could get an even higher rating."

So let's hear a cheer for American ingenuity again. We not only have bomb shelters after all, ours are portable.
