"When Local Becomes National" May 13, 2000
If a major news item breaks out in a location other than a major city, I find the best reporting is done by the local reporters who live in that vicinity. Not every small town has a TV channel to feed a signal to the major networks. But anymore, almost every small town has a newspaper that has a presence on the Web.
The most extensive coverage of the Los Alamos fire is currently being done by the Albuquerque Journal. http://www.abqjournal.com/
They have also broken other news stories pertinent initially to New Mexico but relevant nationally like the Los Alamos securities leaks or German pilots doing "secret" flight testing from the New Mexico base where most of our F117's are located.
Since most of America's aerospace products are tested at Edward's Air Force Base in California, I find the local paper in nearby Palmdale has the most extensive reporting on that topic. They are at http://www.avpress.com/
So how do you find these local papers you ask?
There are 2 huge directories of virtually all the online newspapers in the world. Personally I like the one based in Australia called the Web Wombat. It is at http://www.webwombat.com.au/ But there is another big one at http://www.newspapers.com/
Here at 888WebToday, we know and repeatedly prove that the major media is criminally biased in their reporting on social issues, but at least they have million dollar helicopters with cameras to fly over natural disasters. Small town newspapers vary from town to town as to how stories are slanted. But you can rely on at least one thing from local papers, they know the local geography better than any NY news anchor flown in to smile in front of the camera.
