MAY DAY, MAY DAY, MAY DAY!
Ever since the 70's, sponsored T-shirts have become fashionably acceptable in many casual settings. I was in my 20's back then and wore several evangelistic message shirts. I have no idea whether they did any good. "In your face" evangelism only works on some people, if at all. 25 years later, I seldom see any Christians wearing message T-shirts. I did see a guy in a Hollywood camera store wearing a church of Satan T-shirt about a year ago. So I think the God versus Satan battle has moved on to different battle grounds and techniques.
I have heard of TV technicians working the Academy awards wearing T-shirts with Tuxedos printed on them.
Matt Drudge says he wore a T-shirt with an ironed on photo of Elian Gonzalez at the Bloomberg "after party" for the White House Correspondents Dinner on 4/30/2000. The invitation was to be a Black Tie event. I admire the man's courage. If he archives this story, you really should read how he said good-by to Clinton and how decadent the affair was. His T-shirt was the most tasteful thing there. He is at http://www.drudgereport.com/
At least in the commercial world, branded T-shirts are still very much around. Whether funny or just a commercial plug, it seems you have to say something if you wear one as your only "upper attire." Plain T's are strictly for use as real underwear.
At http://www.petrix.com/shirt/ you can pick up a free T-shirt, postage included. They distribute T-shirts with slight errors in the printing. The shirts themselves all passed physical inspection. But when the graphics were printed, minor things went wrong, like the proper shade of ink or size of the company's logo changed. The companies placing the order decided to pay for the shirts anyway and let the manufacturer distribute them to non-regular clients. This amounts to cheap advertising into areas they ordinarily would not reach, like YOUR closet. So their goof up, is your gain.
No bets what company's shirts will be available, but the price is right.
