WHAT'S WRONG WITH HARRY POTTER?
BY J. Walter Diamond
November 19, 2001 888WebToday-- Nothing, that is unless you're not into witchcraft, boy wizard's and planting the concept of dark satanical magical powers, at an early age, into the minds of millions of young innocent children across the globe.
Children at the tender ages of 3-17 of course will be drawn to all of the special magic, as in the power to fly, introduced in the character of one slightly nerdy orphaned Harry Potter. The plot is predictable and Daniel Radcliffe, looking like a young Bill Gates, waiting for the director to yell "cut!" is a bit amateurish and flat in this over marketed movie.
Learning about evil is good in the film, as children jet across a soccer field somewhere in the friendly abyss of Hogwort Academy. This time the dark powers are aimed straight away at the minds of the children of our world, served up as a tempting romp like Tinker Bell and Peter Pan innocently at their best frolic and play in Never- Never land.
And really hasn't it been an age long goal of Satan and his lurid followers to paint Hell and evil as more exciting and fun than any day in a boring, dull, godly church service?
For years, Hollywood has scared us with Friday the 13th and Hellhouse and the Omen Trilogy plus one, the Exorcists and spinning demonic heads and a barrage of sickening cinematic trash. Maybe now with the introduction of a friendly sorcerer, like Potter, evil doing will evolve into something as nice as a family trip to the most wonderful place on Earth Disneyland!
But why not call this film for what it is; a blatant attempt to seduce innocent children by the use of special effects, into desiring to be more like "Potter" with his unchallenged demonic power? Is this really what you want to expose your children too?
Mr. Parsons heading up AOL these days, and Mr. Pittman, the big cheese over at Time Warner are planning to do a total of 4-7 sequels of Mr. Potter's "witchcraft" and if the movie does anywhere near what the books have done in world markets, with sales in the 115 million range, they will have their way with things. What does this say about the direction our culture is heading in?
With interactive massive internet advertising, Potter, good or bad is expected to be one of the top grossing films of all time, raking in up to $75 million in a three-day opening, showing at 3,750 theaters in the US and as much as $2 Billion in total sales, with over 200 promotional toys and games already planned to follow after the film.
As caring, loving Christians should we roll over and expose our children to such evil fantasies? Where should film-makers draw the lines? At gross dollars earned at the box office for such anti Christian fare? This film and the other satanic films streaming out of Hollywood would go unmade, if each of us would refuse to pay their bills and boycott this gross injustice that insults both the Lord and our children!
Are we so addicted to fun and entertainment that we no longer have the will to discriminate against this popular tripe? What about eternal responsibilities, when someday each of us will stand alone before God and have to answer for how we trained our children and the choices we made or did not make, as we point them toward godliness and decency?
The Bible does make mention, "that in the end of days, they will call evil good and good evil." Is this the true hallmark of a film like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone?
Please think about what it is you are endorsing and what you will allow
to go unchecked in the mind and imagination of your precious children.
Say no to Potter and in so doing you will have said yes to Jesus Christ
and after all he is the true E-ticket friend, not just for two brief hours,
but for all eternity.
