Gore Invites Boy Scouts to White House Boy Scouts Extend Invitation to President Elect Attend Annual Jamboree

WASHINGTON, DC, September 1, 2000 (WebToday)-- During the heat of the Boy Scout flap, Gore Chief Media Spokesman Jim Kennedy told WebToday that the Boy Scouts are welcome to visit the Vice President in his office at the White House.
Boy Scouts National Media Spokesman Greg Shields responded to the Gore invitation saying, "Boy Scouts is totally apolitical and we can endorse no candidate for office. We haven't received an invitation from Mr. Gore and we would respond to the invitation when it is received."
When WebToday asked Mr. Shields about the possiblilty that National Park Rangers might not be provided for the annual Boy Scouts Jamboree, due to their not extending membership to homosexuals, Shields continued, "Boy Scouts of America is a private agency and we simply ask to be treated like any other private organization. If they're interested in talking to 35,000 people who are interested in the outdoors, the Jamboree would be a good place to do it."
The two week event is scheduled to take place next July and August at Fort A.P. Hill in Eastern Virginia, just south of Washington, DC.
Shields concluded, "The President, whoever he is then, is invited to speak at the Jamboree. Every President since Franklin Roosevelt, including Clinton, has visited our annual Jamboree and spoken to the Boy Scouts. "
As it stands, if Al Gore wins, he will have three options: 1) To obey Bill Clinton's Executive Order, 2) To issue a new Executive Order rescinding the old Executive Order, or 3) Attend the Jamboree and send in Rangers in "civil disobedience" to the "law" set by the Executive Order.
Ah, what a tangled web we weave.
